Cathy J. Berlin of Sedalia, died Friday, August 25, 2006, at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia, Missouri, after an eleven year battle with cancer. She was born January 12, 1949, in Sedalia, the daughter of Archie P. and Dorothy Landes. On December 26, 1970, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sedalia, she was married to Robert D. Berlin, who survives of the home. Mrs. Berlin was raised and educated in Sedalia. She was a 1966 graduate of Smith-Cotton High School, where she was the Activity Queen her senior year. She continued her education at the University of Missouri-Columbia where she graduated in 1969 with a B.S. in Latin and German. She taught in Raytown for one year, then returned to Sedalia and taught English and German at Smith-Cotton High School for nine years where she was active in the Foreign Language Association. She transferred to Sedalia Middle School where she taught English, Latin and German for a further seven years, where she was instrumental in initiating both Latin and German programs. She was the sponsor for the Literature Festival. In 1987, she led a group of local students on a three week youth exchange to Germany. She was a past member of Missouri State Teachers' Association and a current member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization for teachers. She was a former Cub Scout den mother, and an instructor for 4-H programs in cooking, cross-stitch, international foods and bread making. She served a two year term as president of Women's Service League, a two year term as president of Sorosis, and a two year term as president of the IP Chapter of PEO, where she held other assorted offices. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and was the 2006 Relay For Life Chairwoman. She was a member of "NNBC" Book Club and several bridge clubs. She was a member of Sacred Heart's Journey in Faith program and a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed her family and friends, traveling, entertaining, playing bridge, cross-stitch, knitting, horseback riding and especially being a grandmother.
Also surviving are two daughters, Megan G. Baker and husband Christopher, of Iowa City, IA, Laura C. Redinger and husband John, of St. Louis, MO; two sons, Aaron R. Berlin, of St. Louis, MO, Adam B. Berlin, of Columbia, MO; twin granddaughters, Lena and Raina Baker, of Iowa City, IA; her mother, Dorothy Landes-Eken and step father, Truman Eken; three sisters, Linda Vedder, of Springfield, MO, Janet Thomas, of Sedalia, Nancy Melton, of Sedalia; and one brother, A.P. Landes II, of Columbia, MO. She was preceded in death by her father, Archie P. Landes.
Funeral Mass was held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 28, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Vince Hoying officiating. Pallbearers were Charles Wilkerson, Rick Miller, David Wuellner, Gary Fleming, Jack McIntosh and Alan Wilson. Honorary Pallbearers were Ann Fleming, Winnie Davis, Becky Garst, Terri Maple, Carole Salmon, Marcia Turner, Claudia Wolf and Janet Thomas.
