John Finley of Indiana wed Keziah Head of Tennessee on September 5, 1844, in Pine Ridge, Montgomery County, Arkansas.
A story in the family by Samuel Emanuel Finley's daughter Grace says he was educated at Ocean View School, and was 6 years old when he crossed the plains with his parents. There were many hardships, and they were once surrounded by the Indians and kept prisoners two days and nights.
Finally one man escaped, stole a horse from the Indians and went to a fort and brought the Cavalry to their rescue.
Daughter Nancy is the first California born child in May 1854.
