She lost her mother when she was 2 years old and she was raised by her Aunt Susan who subsequently became her step-mother. Ethel and Robert were the parents of 8 children, 6 of whom lived to adulthood. A boy and a girl, both under the age of 2, died as the result of a fire in early 1912.
