Longtime resident of Dora, James E. Burkett, died early Friday morning, July 28, in Denver, CO. He turned 97 years old on July 26. His children, grandchildren, and great-grand children were in Denver for an early celebration of his birthday on July 14. James lived most of his life on the Burkett Farm homesteaded by his father, A. J. Burkett, in 1907. James is survived by his three children: Ann Eubank of Denver, CO, Charlotte Smith of Nashville, TN, and Richard Burkett of Ruidoso Downs, NM; seven grandchildren: Stephanie Shober and Lesley Hodges of Denver, Sara Ross, Melissa Smith, Margaret Roark and Elizabeth Smith of Nashville, and Eddy Burkett of Lovington; nine great-grand children; two nephews: Jay Burkett of San Pismo Beach, CA and Jack Mickey Burkett of Dora; and two great-nieces: Loreann Braden of Lubbock and Lindsey Burkett of Denver.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A.J. and Mary Ann Burkett; his wife, Averil Richards Burkett; his second wife, Musette Terry Burkett; and his brother, Alan Burkett.
Visitation will be at l0:00 AM and the funeral service at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 2 at the Dora Church of Christ where James served as a deacon for many years. Burial will be at the Mount Zion Cemetery. Terry Smith and Doug Hale will officiate. Pallbearers will be Gene Richards, Steven Richards, Lane Evans, Gordon Fraze, Barry Hays and Covey Wall. Honorary pallbearers will be Adrian Stroup, John Brumfield, George Brumfield, Frank Allison, Roy Custer, Gerald Gaines, Billy Prater and H.R. Terry.
Arrangements under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary, 356-4455.
