Did you know the "Soccer Lady"?
"Yes, I saw her the other day, she was..." Most would go on to say they saw her helping somewhere. Others may say they saw her, did not know who she was and cannot recall what she was doing, but remember her smile. Some people will only sense something is missing from an all too familiar scene, but most of us understand well what important component is missing. This woman was Mary Angeles of Chesterton, who died Sept. 14, 1990.
Those who did not know her name called her the "Soccer Lady." For years she helped build the Chesterton Soccer Club. Mary was one of the indispensable people. She was a person who did the important things. There were days she painted the lines on the soccer fields in the rain so all would be ready game day. She would work the concession stand on tournament days; planning, setting up, cooking and even running home for mustard when they ran out. Mary would help with registration, shirt orders, team pictures and on and on and on. Her efforts were important in making soccer enjoyable for the girls and boys who played, the parents and spectators who watched, and those who coached and refereed.
Mary's help extended to other organizations. She worked with the prom committee, sold ads for the high school soccer program and was active in the Yost Elementary PTO. She was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Polish Women's Alliance Group 81.
Even with all of her activities, Mary's family was No. 1 in her heart, as was evidenced by Mary and her husband, Angelo, being nominated for Blue Ribbon Parents for their outstanding service to the community and Yost Elementary School.
The Chesterton Soccer Club has established a memorial fund in honor of Mary. Contributions to this fund may be made to Porter Bank in Chesterton or to the Soccer Club.
Albert Schweitzer said, "The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve." Mary served well. Mary will continue to serve as an example and our source of inspiration.
