His claims to these inventions, and his insistance that they were stolen and used by rivals, brought about the "Twenty Years War Against the Railroad Companies" in which Winans and his lawyers sued many railroad firms in hopes to reclaim patent rights and royalties. He retired soon after this long legal campaign. At the time of his death Winans' estate was worth over twenty million dollars.
