Mr. William H. "Whitey" Dennis passed away Friday, August 13, 2004, at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.Services will be conducted at 10"00 A.M., Monday, August 16, 2004, at Pat A. Riley Funeral Home in Nederland. A gathering of friends and family will take place from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.Born on March 10, 1927, in Grafton, West Virginia, Mr. Dennis had lived in Port Arthur for a number of years before moving to Sour Lake where he lived until his death. He was retired from the Merchant Marines where he served for twenty-one years in the engine room and worked as a boilermaker. He also served in the Army as a Corporal in the Korean Conflict. He worked for the Kirby Lumber Co. in Silsbee for nineteen years.Mr. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ada Dennis; three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Betty Lou Dennis of Sour Lake; children and their spouses; William Dennis and Cynthia Roberts of Beaumont, Vincent and Phyllis Dennis of Medical Lake, Washington, Douglas Dennis of Sour Lake, Howard and Miranda Dennis of Deville, Louisiana, Winona "Sissy" Glaze of Sour Lake, and Carl and Lisa Dennis of Grayburg, Texas, seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.Dennis, as we always called him, had a great sense of humor. When we were growing up, almost every week-end our families would get together and go fishing. His wife is my Daddy's niece. (my cousin) So we all had a good time. That meant 10 kids, in our two families, and anybody else who came along! He would always tease me and say, "Little Mary Ann, playing in the sand." He still said it, up until the last time I saw him early in 2004. He was a good carpenter. He loved to build furniture, and made some really beautiful pieces. He always had a smile and a hug. We miss you Dennis.
