Artist. Considered one of America's leading Impressionist painters, he often depicted California landscapes, many of them featuring poppies and lupines. Redmond was a deaf mute after losing his hearing at age two to scarlet fever. Educated at the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, he later studied painting in Paris. He became friends with actor Charlie Chaplin, who he helped in perfecting his pantomime technique. Chaplin gave Redmond a studio on the movie lot, collected many of his paintings, and sponsored him in silent acting roles, including playing the sculptor in "City Lights" (1931) and a featured part in "You'd Be Surprised." In 1899 Redmond married Carrie Ann Jean of Robinson, Crawford, Illinois, also a deaf mute, and they had three children.
