Oldest son of James H. Broaddus; brother of George, Caroline, and Agnes.
Married to Virginia Mercer Henshaw in 1848, he fathered Maurice Edwin, "Willie" William Richard, Manley, "Lucy" Lucia Henshaw, Effie Virginia, "Maxey" Maxwell Gregg, and "Frank" Richard Franklin.
Killed by a fall from his horse a few months after war ended.

Company H "Sparta Grays" of Caroline County, 30th Virginia Infantry, Walker's Brigade, District of Aquia, Dept of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Sparta VA; a 39 year-old Farmer, merchant.
Enlisted on 12/2/1860, he was elected as a 1st Lieutenant into "H" Co. VA 30th Infantry.
Present on all rolls with several family furloughs, thru 4/16/1862 when not re-elected in reorganization of Company; resigned commission/discharged.

The 30th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in June, 1861. Men of this unit were from Fredericksburg and the counties of Spotsylvania, Caroline, Stafford, and King George.
