Mary E. Actor was the daughter of Herman Charles and Sarah B. (Davidson) Actor. On October 9, 1887 in Waitsburg, Walla Walla Co., Washington, she married Hannibal Lincoln Cantonwine ("Winfield S."), the son of George C. and Mary Malinda (Lewis) Cantonwine and grandson of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.
Below is an excerpt from a newspaper article on the occasion of Mary's 90th birthday:
Walla Walla [Walla Walla Co., WA], Union-Bulletin, Friday, April 20, 1956
"Valley Native Observes Her 90th Birthday Here:
Nine decades of a busy life—all spent in the Walla Walla Valley—were climaxed in a 90th birthday party Wednesday for Mrs. Mary Cantonwine at the Williamson Nursing home where she now resides. In excellent health despite her years, she greeted friends during the afternoon and officiated at the cutting of the decorated birthday cake
Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Herman C. Actor, early comers to the Valley. In fact, her father first visited Walla Walla in 1853, returning a little later to make this his permanent home. The daughter, Mary, was born April 18, 1866 at nearby Dixie and married a young neighboring farmer, W. S. Cantonwine, better known to his friends as Lincoln. At that time she moved only 2 1/8 miles from her old home to the new one. After Mr. Cantonwine died in 1919 [1920], his widow left the ranch (she still retained ownership) and moved to a house in Dixie where she enjoyed indulging in her hobby of flower-raising. The little place was a veritable bower of flowers and each Memorial day friends came for general bouquets of blossoms. Some four years ago she moved into Walla Walla. Mrs. Cantonwine was one of seven Actor brothers and sisters, next to the oldest, and is the only surviving member of her immediate family. . . ."
Mary lived to the age of 98.
