Robert D. Snoddy, 89, left our earth Tuesday morning, April 18, 2006 to join his wife of 64 years, Mary Ruth, to be together again for all eternity.
Born in Piedmont, West Virginia to Mr. & Mrs. William Snoddy. They moved to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where Bob graduated high school an excellent athlete. He and several of his friends were offered athletic scholarships to Findlay College in Findlay, Ohio, the first in each of their families to receive college degrees. Bob played basketball and baseball for Findlay College, and was inducted into the Findlay College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. His first week at Findlay College, Bob met Mary Ruth and they were together until 2004 when Mary Ruth passed away, Bob and Mary Ruth were married shortly after college graduation, 1942. Bob had just signed a professional baseball contract with the New York Yankees and "Finally had enough money for the marriage license."
Bob played Professional baseball through the 1946 season, then went to work with Buckeye Ditching Machines in Findlay, Ohio. Bob, Mary Ruth and their two sons, Robert Charles and Thomas Beard, were transferred to Tulsa, OK, to help open Buckeye's first parts distribution center to help address the booming oil and gas industry in Oklahoma.
In 1959, the Snoddy family moved to Odessa to join Plains Machinery. Through the next 25 years, Robert worked with Wells Machine; and then started Double Seal Ring Company, which he sold in the early '80s to become a full-time swimming pool manager for the grandchildren.
Active civically, Robert belonged to Asbury Methodist Church, the Rotary and attended every baseball and basketball game within a 100-mile radius of Odessa for over 40 years.
Known and loved by an incredible number of people, Robert was blessed with many, many friends. They and his family will miss his wonderful spirit and love of life.
Robert is survived by his two sons, Robert Charles, Colleyville, TX, and Thomas Beard, Odessa, TX; four Grandchildren and three Great Grandchildren.
Visitation with the family will be at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Thursday, April 20, 2006 from 7 to 9 pm.
Robert's Funeral services will be at Asbury Methodist Church on Friday, April 21, 2006 at 2:00 pm. with Rev. Paul E. Bauernfeind officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Asbury Wesley Sunday School Class. Pallbearers will be Steve Barron, John Bushman, Ragon Gilbert, Doug Shelton, Mike Podzemny, Terry Richey, Rodney Hurt and Les Littlejohn.
In honor of Bob's love of Church and Sports, the family asks that Memorials be made to Asbury Methodist Church or the Odessa College Wrangler Club.
