Nicholas was born in Germany, and came to the United States 1855-1860, reportedly as an indentured servant, entering the country along the Gulf of Mexico. He married Margaret Steckler. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private in Company D, 91st Indiana Infantry, entering service on August 20, 1862, and being discharged on June 26, 1865. He apparently was afflicted with rheumatism beginning in 1863, for which he later filed a military pension. A farmer, he was described as being 5' 6" tall, with a fair complexion light hair and blue eyes. He is listed as a charter member of Indiana G.A.R. Post 543.
