Death claimed Leonardous Howell Childs 93, at Freestone County hospital early Sunday morning, July 5, following an illness of two weeks. Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 4 O'Clock with the Rev James Bishop, pastor and the Rev H.L. McKissack of Teague officiating.
Interment followed at Fairfield cemetery under the direction of Capps funeral home.
Mr. Childs was born in Fairfield March 31, 1871, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lafayette Childs, members of early Freestone county families. His uncle fought with the Confederate Army at Shiloh and his father being too young for the Army was a dispatch courier for General Robert E. Lee's Army and helped relay the final message of the war.
The Rev. McKissack, a friend of many years, used a passage from the II Samuel: 3:38, "A great man has fallen" as the basis for his brief message in regards to Mr. Childs Christian life. He had served many years as a deacon in hi schurch.
The deceased was married to Mis Lou Herndon who died in 1947. they lived here almost all of their married life. Mr. Childs had made his home with his sister, Mrs. L.C. Kirgan since 1947 and was lovingly called "Uncle Buddy" by all his family.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs Mary Lou Nilsen of Houston; Three sons, Travis Childs of Fairfield; James L. Childs of Kingaland; Leon Childs of Carrollton; five grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren. Mrs. Kirgan, other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were C.E. Childs, L.J. Davis, Jim L. Willard, Condis Robertson, Jack Barber, and W.D. Moore.
