But he had a long career in baseball, managing on the minor-league level for 27 years (1949 to 1976). The feisty skipper won pennants at Corpus Christi of the Gulf Coast League in 1951, Dallas of the Texas League in 1955, Phoenix of the Pacific Coast League in 1958, Tacoma of the PCL in 1961 and Waterbury of the Eastern League in 1970. His Charleston Charlies lost the 1972 International League flag by one game to the Louisville Colonels. Other stops included Greenville and Paris of the Big State League, Mayfield of the Kitty League, Minneapolis and Oklahoma City of the American Association, Rocky Mount of the Carolina League, Macon and Knoxville of the Southern League, Buffalo of the IL, Portland of the PCL, Pawtucket and Williamsport of the Eastern League. His mangerial record was 1,993-1,927.
