TRENTON -- Alfonso Leroy Weaver Sr. passed away Wednesday just short of his 90th birthday.



Born Nov. 6, 1915 to the late Isaac William and Anna Elizabeth Benjamin Weaver in Philadelphia, PA; Alfonso, who is also known as Fonnie, was the third of 10 children, Thelma, William, Alfonso, Ruth, Dorothy, Edward, Juanita, Fredrick, C. Anthony, and Dolores.

He was educated in the Trenton Catholic and public school systems.

In 1936, Alfonso and his father opened a tailor and dry cleaning store located at 206 Perry Street in Trenton, which remained in continuous operation until 1996 when he retired. For 60 years, A.L. Weaver's Dry Cleaning and Tailor Shop was a popular meeting place for family, friends, neighbors and patrons. As a tailor, Alfonso was known for always being well dressed in a suit, tie and white shirt.

In 1940, Alfonso married Janet Melton of Trenton and to this union they had six children, Carol Ann, Alfonso Jr., twins, Lawrence and Anthony, Michael and Christine.

Alfonso was predeceased by two of his children, Lawrence and Christine. He is survived by Janet M. Weaver of Trenton; his daughter, Carol Ann West of Bowie, MD; his sons, Alfonso Jr. and his wife Beth of Beachwood, Anthony and his wife Diann of Oak Hill, VA and Michael Sr., and his wife Stephanie of Plainsboro. He is also survived by eight beloved grandchildren, Camille, Darnell, Shelley, Jocelyne, Danyelle, Andia, Michael Jr. and Caitlin; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Weaver of Los Angeles, CA, and C. Anthony Weaver of Youngstown, OH; a sister, Dolores Harris of Chicago, IL; and a host of family and friends.

The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Hughes Funeral Home, 324 Bellevue Ave., Trenton.

Interment will be 10 am. Monday at Stonewall Memorial Gardens in Manassas, VA, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Kenny Smith of First Baptist Church Vienna, Vienna, VA.

Calling hours will be noon to 1 p.m. Saturday followed by a 1 p.m. service officiated by the Rev. Simeon Spencer of Union Baptist Church of Trenton, at the funeral home.
