Daddy's Life Sketch -Larry LeRoy Weston was born on July 11, 1931, in Los Olivos, California, the only child of Sonie and Kenneth Weston. It was said that he was so small that he was put on the wood burning stove to keep him warm. He grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley with his brother, and many cousins and friends â€" he said that he had a pretty good childhood. One memory he once told was about his Grandpa Lonnie. When Larry was just a little guy he would often visit his grandpa who always gave him a shot glass of Larry's beer (water with a little beer). One day Grandpa Lonnie didn't have time for Larry because he had to go to a funeral; so, Larry decided that he would get his own drink of beer, but this beer was without water in it. His mother later found a pretty tipsy little boy walking down the street singing "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man." His parents divorced when he was young. His mother later married Charles Woods and in time his brother was born. They lived on a ranch in Ballard, California, and raised livestock -- he especially liked raising sheep. Larry was in the 4-H and FFA and showed his sheep and cattle in the local fairs. He even showed his sheep and cows in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. He went to Santa Ynez Valley High School where he excelled in sports â€" he loved all sports. His brother said that when Larry played football he would often be knocked unconscious after a tackle and they would take him off the field on a stretcher; as soon as he regained his senses he asked to be put back into the game. He won many sports awards and set many records at Santa Ynez Valley High School â€" some records even stand to this day. In the summer of 1948, Larry met his sweetheart for eternity, Katharyn. Katharyn first noticed him during the summer she stayed with her Aunt Lillian. Katharyn was riding her horse one day and she noticed this really cute boy driving by in his little blue car. She craned her body so far that she fell off her horse. After brushing herself off Katharyn went back to her Aunt's home and asked her aunt who that cute boy was and her aunt said, "That's Larry Weston. He lives across the creek. Do you want to meet him? He'll be playing softball with Uncle Don on Saturday." Well, they met and fell in love and in July 1949 Larry and Katharyn were married in Yuma, Arizona. They eloped because her sister-in-law Betty put her wedding dress on just days before their wedding. This was so her sister-in-law and her brother Myrt could have wedding pictures also. She told her parents that she would not wear a dress someone else had already worn and Larry & Katharyn eloped to Arizona. Larry worked hard all of his life. He began working at Tidewater Oil Company in 1949. In 1956, he was transferred to Taft, California where he and his family lived for 21 years. He was made a foreman and assigned to oversee the McKittrick Lease. He later moved to Bakersfield to oversee parts of the Kern River Lease. Tidewater Oil Company later became Getty Oil Company and then Texaco at the time of his retirement. He retired, but that did not last for long because he began a career in real estate a few years later. After the housing market began to decline Larry retired from real estate and began raising sheep with his eldest daughter. Larry raised sheep for 4-H kids and for FFA students. Many of the sheep won ribbons at the Kern County Fair. Later on he and his second daughter began raising novelty sheep called "Babydoll Southdown". However, just as their business was beginning to flourish Larry died.Larry and his sweetheart had a happy family. They were married just short of 57 years and were blessed with four children. They loved their children very much and their children loved them equally as much. Later they were blessed with 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grand children â€" they are apple of their Grandpa Larry's eye. Larry loved the Lakers, Dodgers, and the Angels. He would sometimes take his family to baseball games in Los Angeles and Anaheim. He and a friend were at at Dodger game and watched Sandy Koufax pitch a perfect game. Larry really enjoyed the outdoors. His loved hunting, fishing in Baja, California for marlin, and fishing in Alaska with his son-in-law for salmon and halibut. Larry and Katharyn also enjoyed golf on television and on the course and golfed together as much as time would permit. Larry was also an avid gardener -- he had a garden almost every year. We all loved getting his fresh vegetables! Larry Weston died suddenly on February 27, 2006. He leaves behind his wife, his 3 daughters and his 1 son, his 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, who miss him more than words can express. He is also survived by a brother and step-sister and his 99 year old step-father, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a 32nd degree Mason and held many Masonic posts in Taft, California and Bakersfield, California.He was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved going out with the Missionaries to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ.He was a resident of Kern County for over 50 years.We all love him and miss him more than words can say. Larry Weston is my Daddy -- I'm his second daughter. My heart was shattered the day that he unexpectedly died. He is my Daddy, my friend, and my mentor and I miss him more than mere words could ever express. Life for me has not been the same without him!
