ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
The Founder of Aurora, Now West Denver, Gives Up Life's Battle.
Anselm H. Barker, one of Colorado's oldest pioneers, died at his residence, 1531 Washington avenue at an early hour this morning. Mr Barker came to Colorado in 1858 and built the first house in West Denver.
He came with the Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Immigrant company and the party had fifteen wagons. It was the first large train to arrive here. They reached Denver on October 24, 1858, and settled in the little village of Montana, which occupied the site of Overland park.
Afterward Mr. Barker prospected for gold in the Platte and in the fall of 1858 founded the town of Aurora which occupied the west bank of Cherry Creek and which is now West Denver. He was the first man to build a house in the town. He prospered and engaged in various enterprises until he became of the best known men in the territory. He retired from business several years ago, and since then has lived on his income.
He has been president of the Colorado Pioneers' society, and was one of the most popular members. His death is very much regretted. The Pioneers' society will have charge of the funeral. The deceased leaves a family. One of his sons was connected with the fire department for years, and now manages the fire partrol.
Mr. Barker was 73 years old. He was a Mason, and before his death was the only surviving member of one of the first Masonic lodges in Colorado.
