He was the oldest son of nine children of Jacob C and Isabella Confer Bechdel. He was born and raised in Marsh Creek Pennsyvania, his parents being farmers. he married Miss Emmaline Haines in 1874 and they raised six children, two had died durig childhood.
His obituary in the CLINTON REPUBLICAN of 14 Nov 1906 reads: "Joseph Bechdel, a well known resident of Liberty township, residing near Blanchard, died at 3 p.m. Wednesday, after a lingering illness, due to the optic nerves becoming diseased which affected his brain. He was aged 56 years and was a highly respected citizen and a farmer by occupation. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. William Gunsalus and Mrs. Hayes Strunk, of this borough, and three sons, Jacob, William, and Lloyd. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at one o'clock at the house and interment was made in the cemetery at Romola."

Bechdel, residing near Blanchard, died Wednesday the 7th, after a lingering illness, due to the optic nerves becoming diseased which affected his brain. He was aged 56 years and was a highly respected citizen and a farmer by occupation. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. William Gunsalus and Mrs. Hayes Strunk, of that borough, and three sons, Jacob, William, and David."

His obituary in the DEMOCRATIC WATCHMAN of Fri. 16 Nov 1906 reads: "Liberty township lost one of its best known citizens last week in the death of Joseph Bechdel, on Wednesday. For a long time he had suffered with diseased optic nerves which finally affected his brain and caused his death. He was 56 years old. All his life he followed the occupation of a farmer and was well known throughout the entire lower Bald Eagle valley. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. William Gunsallus and Mrs. Hayes Strunk, of Beech Creek; Jacob, William, and Lloyd, at home. The funeral was held on Friday afternoon and the remains being taken to Romola for interment."
