It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, aunt, cousin and friend, Odelia Virginia García Doran, at age 93 in her own home. Odelia left with peace and grace her worldly surroundings to be with our Heavenly Father.
Odelia was born in Clayton, NM on March 19, 1921.
Odelia was preceded in death by her parents, Rosita Mares García and Manuel García, her three sisters, Bertha Simpson, Stella Trip and Leola Mae Ware, as well as her husband, Robert L. Doran.
Odelia is survived by her daughter, Chemilla DeCasaus, her nephews, John and Jim Hanners and their families.
March 19, 1921, her birthday, is when a yearly migration of swallows are said to return to the Catholic Mission of Capistrano. Odelia felt that this image somehow had given her a life of listening to the sounds of nature. Also, that the Lord had brought her and her family over and through serious obstacles, trials and weather extremes. The enormous blackout wind storms and bitter winters in the Dust Bowl region in Clayton, NM and contrast that to the balmy ocean breezes as she drove through miles and miles of sweet smelling orange groves while living in Los Angeles, CA.
Odelia graduated from Santa Fé High School and then married her high school sweetheart and they moved to Los Angeles, CA so he could work in his family's food import and export business. Odelia worked as a secretary in downtown Los Angeles at the California Western Insurance Company. After a few enjoyable and exciting years her husband, now an Air Force Airplane Gunner, was shot down during World War II over Germany and was pronounced by the military as being MIA (Missing In Action). Her beloved mother-in-law also passed away during this time so she moved back to live with her family and eventually married again to a wonderful man. After passing the Civil Service exam in 1942 and began working on the Manhattan District Project in Los Alamos, NM. Odelia also worked in Santa Fé, NM at Recruiting and Induction. In 1950 the family moved to Albuquerque where she worked for the Corps of Engineers and Air Force Special Weapons, first starting at Sandia Army Base and moving to Kirtland Air Force Base until she retired from government service to spend time with her friends, family and her flower and vegetable garden. Odelia appreciated and enjoyed her many years of service and continued after retirement to keep in touch with some of her best friends, service men and officers that she had worked with. Her and her husband had been members of the VFW Post 401 and the MOCA since 1977. Odelia was frequently cooking her favorite foods for their many various programs and received rave reviews, as well as, numerous awards of recognition for her service. Odelia still cherished her many friendships which have endured throughout all of these years. Her legacy to these worthy groups of great people has been service for others, a generous spirit, and the desire to have fun and create memories.
May her generous spirit be with us all in the sunshine she spread on this Earth. She'll be remembered for her love of laughter, nature, life and a big heart.
