Hearl Hensley 71, died Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at Jewish Hospital. He was born November 20, 1934 in Van, KY. He worked labor jobs most of his life including as a painter at I.C.I. of Americas (the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant). Hearl was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War and also served four years in the Air Force as a Security Police. He qualified as a marksman with "every weapon [he] ever picked up," according to Hearl. Learning to shoot, trap and hunt in the hills of eastern Kentucky, he was a true "hillbilly" and proud of it. His gifts included the ability to "grow anything" and winemaking. According to his brothers, fist fighting was one of Hearl's favorite pasttimes as a young man... and he was good at it. According to his twin, Beryl, "he liked to fight the big ones!" He settled in Charlestown, Indiana with his 'war bride' from England, the former Kathleen Fulham. He was a member of Saint Michael Catholic Church, Charlestown, Indiana for over 40 years and a charter member and past financial secretary of the Saint Andrew Michael Council of the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his son,
David Hensley. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Fulham Hensley; sons, Kevin (Rusty), Mike (Lynn), Paul (Joni), and Bryan Hensley (Tricia); brothers, Beryl, France, John and Billy Ray Hensley; sisters, Nola Morton, Viola Mathews, and Sue Wyatt: and 14 grandchildren. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday December 12 at St. Michael Catholic Church, burial followed in St. Michael Cemetery.Hearl often said that his greatest accomplishment in life was that all of his children knew the Lord.
At the funeral, his second son, Mike, gave the eulogy, remembering Hearl's roots, his love of wildlife (especially birds) and his selfless love and devotion to his children and grandchildren. But especially brought out was Hearl's undying faith in his Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ. One of his favorite verses was:
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
