U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1854 and proceeded to practice law in Mississippi. During the Civil War, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate Army. After the war, he served as the Mississippi District Attorney, (1865-67). Upon the readmission of the State of Mississippi to representation, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses, serving (1870-73). After leaving Congress, he was Attorney General of the State of Mississippi, (1873-77). He also engaged as an author of books on legal subjects, until his death.
