U.S. Congressman. Employed as an agent in his father's cargo shipping business, he traveled extensively in foreign countries until 1832 and then engaged in the iron business in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1851-53) and served in the Massachusetts State Senate in 1858. In 1861, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Appleton, reelected to the Thirty-eighth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until his death.
