Rufus married Orpha Evaline Welch on 29 Jul 1871 and they had the following known children: Samuel Thomas Sharp (1882. My paternal grandfather); Alexander Sharp (1874. Alexander was killed in the Fraterville Mine Explosion on 19 May 1902 and never married.); Frank Sharp (1877); Ellen Sharp (1886); Gordon W. Sharp (1889 and twin to William H. Sharp); William H. Sharp (1889 and twin to Gordon W. Sharp); Marion Jackson Sharp (1890); Nola P. Sharp (1895). All were born in Anderson County, Tennessee.
