Bertretta Mayes Humphreys was born to George and Alice Burgess Mayes. She was the third child of five children. Bertretta graduated from Wilsonville High School. After graduation she taught in a country school for one year, then took a job in the local post office. In May 1935 she married Donald Humphreys of Wymore, Nebraska and to this union one daughter was born. The family moved to Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. In later years she worked at Gold's Department Store in Lincoln as a salesclerk in the China Department. After retiring and selling her home Bertretta spent her remaining years in the Brentwood Estates Retirement community in Lincoln. She enjoyed the activities and the friendships she made in this community.
