John Howard (1807-ca.1879) migrated from South Carolina to Georgia and then on to Mississippi. He was in Mississippi as early as 1841 according to U. S. government land records. In 1841 he purchased federal land in Choctaw County, Mississippi. Most of his children were born in Mississippi.

By 1860 John Howard had moved to Township 17, Bankston, Choctaw County, Mississippi. In 1868 John J. Howard and family moved to Ward 8, Lisbon, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana.

Both John Howard and his wife, Nancy Campbell died about 1879. They are not on the 1880 census.

In her book, "John Howard's Sturdy Limbs, Branches, and Twigs," Virginia H. Strohschein indicates that both John Howard and his wife, Nancy Campbell Howard, are buried in Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery, about 5 miles northeast of Dubach, Louisiana. Dubach is in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, but Lincoln Parish and Claiborne Parish border each other.
