John Howard was born in Greenville County, South Carolina. He married Nancy Campbell, daughter of John H. Campbell (b: ca. 1793 d: bef. 1860 in Choctaw Co, MS) and Mary Trussell (b: ca. 1796 d: aft. 3 July 1860 in Choctaw Co, MS).

By 1860 John Howard had moved to Township 17, Bankston, Choctaw County, Mississippi. In 1868 John J. Howard and family moved to Ward 8, Lisbon, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana.

Both John Howard and his wife, Nancy Campbell died about 1879. They are not on the 1880 census.

In her book, "John Howard's Sturdy Limbs, Branches, and Twigs," Virginia H. Strohschein indicates that both John Howard and his wife, Nancy Campbell Howard, are buried in Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery, about 5 miles northeast of Dubach, Louisiana. Dubach is in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, but Lincoln Parish and Claiborne Parish border each other.
