Joseph Adam, 73 died at his home at 737 Eleventh Street, Tell City, at 2:00 p.m. last Saturday, October 17. He had been ill the past five years. He suffered a stroke of apoplexy at that time but was well enough since then to get out and walk with the aid of a cane, although he was in a wheelchair for some months after being stricken. He suffered another stroke about two weeks ago and then another severe one on Friday night prior to his passing.
Joe Adam was born in Tell City August 6, 1880, the son of Joseph and Katherine Strobel Adam. He spent his entire life in Tell City and was married September 10, 1904 to Miss Floriena A. Schauberger. Five daughters were born to them.
Joe Adam was a popular man, he had many friends. He had a wonderful disposition and usually found something funny and something to laugh about in every incident or happening. He was a machine operator in various Tell City plants most of his life. He worked at the Tell City Desk Company 30 years; also at the U.S. Hame Company and at the Tell City Furniture Company where he retired five years ago due to ill health. He served the Loyal Order of Moose several years as custodian of the Moose club in Tell City.
Joe was a Republican and he served as city clerk of Tell City on three occasions. He was appointed in 1906 by the late Mayor Theodore Kiefer to serve the unexpired term of Frank Hinkle. Then he was appointed again by Mayor Kiefer in 1918 to serve the unexpired term of Adolph Bohm. In November, 1921 he was elected to the office and served for four years. He was an efficient city clerk and his records in the city hall office still stand as a record for others to try to equal in perfection and neatness.
