Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, November 18, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Ann's Church, Effingham, Kansas with Rev. Benjamin Tremmel, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Ann's Church Cemetery with flag folding services under the auspices of the American Legion Post #6. Visitation with the family will be Sunday, November 17th from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M. at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude's Hospice and may be left in care of the funeral home.

John was born July 3, 1930 in Monrovia, Kansas the son of John T. and Nell Burns Bonnel. He attended elementary school at Nortonville, Kansas then moving with his family to Seneca, Kansas where he attended and graduated from Seneca High School.

He and the former Paula Nugent were united in marriage on November 8, 1952 in Miami, Florida. Mrs. Bonnel preceded him in death on December 17, 2004.

John served in the United States Navy, retiring after twenty years of service for his country from 1948 until 1967. He then served as a rural postal carrier in the Chelsea, Michigan area for over twenty years retiring in 1995. With his wife, Paula, they moved to Lancaster, Kansas in 1997 and built their retirement home. For a short time John also served as a rural postal carrier in the Lancaster, Kansas area.

He was a member of St. Ann's Church, Effingham, Kansas. He was a life-time member of Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post #6 of the American Legion where he had served as past Commander; past 1st vice-commander, currently serving as sergeant of arms and service officer for the post. He was also a life-time member of V.F.W. Post #1175 serving in charge of the military assistance program.

Survivors include two sons, Tom J. (DeAnn) Bonnel, Lancaster, KS, John M. Bonnel, Gregory, MI, two daughters, Denise M. Porter, Muskogee, OK, Mary "Beth" (Todd) Hudson, Gregory, MI, two brothers, Nick Bonnel, Erving, TX, Bob Bonnel, Atchison, KS, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by a son, James Bonnel, a daughter, Susan Bonnel and an uncle, Sid Bonnel.
