Bishop Eugene Luther Addis, age 92, of Newnan, Georgia, left this life to begin eternity with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven, on Monday, October 3, 2022.

Mr. Addis was born on January 13, 1930, in Walhalla, South Carolina, the son of the late Gus Lewis Addis and Lillian Esther LeCroy-Addis, both of Walhalla, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Geraldine Lois Pearson-Addis, on March 1, 2010.

Eugene Luther Addis, known as E.L, served as an Ordained Bishop of the Church of God, Cleveland, TN, for over fifty years. He preached his first sermon in February 1968, at a church he planted in Fayetteville, Georgia. Reverend Addis would serve as senior pastor for numerous churches in the Northern Georgia region over the next fifty years.

E.L Addis was a Master Brickmason and Stonemason by trade for over seventy years. He had a passion for mission work and used his expertise to build churches, parsonages, orphanages, and medical clinics in Central and South America. He continued this work after retiring from full-time ministry and has contributed to projects in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Paraguay.

Eugene was a loving, exemplary Dad to his four sons, and a devoted husband to the love of his life and partner in ministry, Geraldine. He was a funny and often mischievous "Paw-Paw" for his many grandchildren, who have ample memories of jokes, antics, and pranks he shared. His smile always brightened the room!

Mr. Addis loved being outdoors hunting and fishing. He worked in his vegetable garden, canned the fruits of his labor, and enjoyed camping on the rivers in the mountains. Eugene enjoyed tending to his chickens and his canine companion, Buddy. His favorite tv shows were Gunsmoke and Wagon Train.

Above all else, Eugene Addis loved the Lord God and taught his children and grandchildren to love God. His love for people led him to a life of service leading many people, including his father and siblings, to Christ through teaching and preaching the gospel. He was a Man of God, who fought a good fight and finished his course.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 says: "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might," and Eugene embodied this command in all his endeavors during his life on this earth. Reverend Addis was blessed with 92 years of good health and was still active until the last nine months. On his deathbed, he still gave up his trademark smile for his caring nurses at Winthrop Manor. E.L Addis was preceded in death by his brothers Glen Addis, Charles Addis, Frank Addis, and Ray Addis; sisters Clara Addis Owens, Mabel Addis Owens, and Betty Addis, all of Oconee, South Carolina. He was also preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Nancy Knight Addis (Kenneth), of Newnan, GA.

Eugene is survived by a brother, Lewis Addis (Rose Marie) of Salem, South Carolina. He is also survived by his four sons: Ken Addis, Newnan GA; Farrel Addis (Michelle), of Hampton, GA; Ronnie Addis (Becky), of Summerville, GA; and Terry Addis (Pam), of Rome, GA.

Eugene was blessed with eleven grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Grandchildren include Keith Addis (Angela), of Newnan, GA; Cindy Addis-Thompson, of Franklin, GA; Josh Addis (Rachel), of Newnan, GA; Jeff Addis, of Hampton, GA; Tim Addis (Sherry), of McDonough, GA; Kristin Chernyshov (Samy), of McDonough, GA; Ashley Addis, of Hampton GA; Carrie Thompson (Corey), of Hiram, GA, Chris Addis (Hannah), of Decatur, GA; Michelle Finley, of Cumming, GA; and Monte Powell (Trey), of Griffin, GA.

In Newnan, on Saturday, October 15th at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel, visitation noon-1:00 pm followed by a service at 1:00 pm. Graveside service and interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan, GA.
