U.S. Congressman. Moving to Tennessee in 1816, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1818, practiced law in Knoxville and was a member of the Tennessee State Senate in 1824. Moving to Indiana in 1830, he practiced law in Rockville and was appointed by President Jackson district attorney for Indiana, serving (1833-37). In 1839, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until his resignation in 1840. Relocating to Texas, he was appointed Chargé d’Affaires minister to the Republic of Texas, with the rank of General in 1844 and served until his death.
