U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of South Carolina, in 1869, studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1870 and proceeded to practice law in Chester, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1876-82) and elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving (1883- 93). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
