August Henry Briese was born on August 24, 1844, in Prussia. His father was Frederick Briese.

August Briese was conscripted in the Prussian Military. Private family records per Byron Briese, recording his service as four years and four months. It was a conscripted army. This war unified Germany.

August married Augusta Pauline Stegeman on March 1, 1878, and they had four children in Prussia:
Paul Henry (1874 - 1967)
Lena Bertha (1876 - 1965)
Anna M. "Annie" (b. 1879)
Otto (b. 1880).

August immigrated to America with his wife and three children aboard the ship Cimbria. Traveling in steerage with 500 other "German peasants", they departed from Hamburg, Germany, and arrived at Ellis Island in New York on August 19,1882. (The Cimbria sank one year and four months later with great loss of life. See note below)

August listed his occupation as Laborer upon immigration. Three years later in the 1885 US Census, he reported his occupation as "Farmer".

The Briese family settled in Holstein, Iowa, for good. August became a naturalized American citizen on October 28, 1889.

Three more children were born in America:
Frederic August (1883 - 1942)
Teresia Dorthea "Tressie" (Oct 11, 1885 - 1965)
Albert E. Briese (1888 - 1957).

August died on May 1, 1928, at the age of 83.

NOTE: The SS Cimbria was a German Steamer of 3,030 tons, 325' in length, 22' draft and 45' beam. She sailed from Hamburg to New York in 40 days. On January 19, 1883, she was in a collision with the British ship Sultan in heavy fog off the German coast, was holed and sank within 15 minutes with the loss of 389 lives and although seven lifeboats got away, only 133 people were saved.
