Mr. John Robert "Bob" Abbott, of Taunton, died Sunday, June 12 in Morton
Hospital following a period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Helen (Mros) Abbott, his dear wife and best friend for over 60 years. He was born 87 years ago in Taunton, the son of the late Charles R. and Elizabeth C. (Cavanaugh) Abbott. He was educated in Taunton, having graduated from the former Immaculate Conception Grammar School and the former Msgr. James Coyle High School, Class of 1942. Mr. Abbott was a lifelong city resident. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Taunton for many years. After high school, he worked at the Myles Standish Army Camp before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in January 1943, and was Honorable Discharged in March, 1946. He was proud to have served aboard the USS Implicit (AM246) Fleet Minesweeper as a Radioman First Class. The USS Implicit received two battle stars during World War II. He was a Charter member of the National WW II Memorial, the David F. Adams Post #611 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Brockton Chapter 189. Bob enjoyed movies, music and Old Tyme Radio. He was a communicant of the former Immaculate Conception Church in Taunton.
He leaves: 2 sons: Michael and Robert Abbott, both of Taunton; 1 daughter: Deborah Abbott of Taunton; 1 grandson: Derek Abbot and his wife, Amanda of Taunton; 1 great granddaughter: Molly Brenner Abbott of Taunton, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Abbott was also the brother of the late Richard C. Abbott and the late Dorothy H. Abbott.
Funeral services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Visiting Hours are respectfully omitted. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Corline Cronan's Family, c/o Raynham Veterinary Hospital, 402 South Street, East, Raynham, MA 02767. Arrangements are under the direction of The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home of Taunton.
