British Prime Minister. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, University of Oxford, he carved out a career in the English Foreign Office. He served as Foreign Secretary during the periods of World War II and the Cold War, (1940-54). In 1955, he was elected British Prime Minister, serving until he resigned due to ill health in 1957. He was Knighted the 1st Earl of Avon in 1961. He died of cancer at age 79.
