Kentucky secessionist leader 1861. Member of the United States Congress, Kentucky's first district (1875-1879). He was elected and served as judge of the Graves County Court from 1854 to 1861. member of the State house of representatives in 1861; circuit judge for the first judicial district of Kentucky 1868-1874; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1879); chairman of the State railroad commission 1882-1886.
