Mignon Wright Jumel


JUMEL Mignon Wright Jumel, M.D., Emeritus Associate Professor of Medicine at L.S.U. School of Medicine in New Orleans died June 16, 2013 at Lambeth House in New Orleans, age 98.

Dr. Jumel was the Chief of the section of Comprehensive Medicine at L.S.U. and Director of L.S.U.'s outpatient Medicine clinic at Charity Hospital until her retirement in July of 1984.

She was educated at New Orleans Public Schools, earned her undergraduate degree from Newcomb College in 1935 and her MD degree in 1950 from L.S.U. School of Medicine in New Orleans. She was elected to Alpha Omega, National Honor Society while a senior at L.S.U. After an internship and residency in Medicine at Charity Hospital, she became a Diplomat of the of the College of Physicians in 1957.

Dr. Jumel was a World War II veteran having served her country in the U.S. Navy as a communication officer in the Waves. She was stationed in Northampton, Massachusetts, Miami and New York City, 1943 - 1946. She rose to the rank of Lieutenant, U.S.N.R.

Daughter of the late Dr. Allen Jumel and Dora Wright Jumel. She is the sister of the late Mrs. Yvonne Simms, Allen Jumel, III and Bidwell W. Jumel.

Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Les Causeries des Lundi, Alliance Francaise, Louisiana Historical Society, Louisiana Landmark Society, France Amerique, and the New Orleans Academy of Internal Medicine.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the memorial service from St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 10:30 am., visitation from 9:30 am at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

Inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
