Derrick "Richard" Amberman
1704-1784
Derrick Amberman was born in 1704 in Flatlands, Kings County, New York to Jan Dirckse Amberman (1674-1757) and Sara Wyckoff (1681-1747). He had three brothers: Petrus "Peter", Jan "John" and Nicholas; a sister Sara. He married Margareitje Danielse Polhemus (1704-1784) in 1727 at Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church in Flatlands, Kings County, New York. She was born on April 18, 1704 in Brooklyn and was the daughter of Captain Daniel Polhemus and first wife Nieltjie Cornelise Van der Veer, and the granddaughter of Reverend Dominic Johannes Theodorus Polhemus. Her grandfather was the Pastor of the Dutch Reformed Churches of Kings County, New York. Derrick and Margaret moved from Flatlands to Jamaica, Queens, New York and he became a miller by trade. They had five children: Sarah, Daniel, Cornelius, John and Derick Amberman. Derrick Richard Amberman died on March 19, 1784 in Jamaica, Queens, New York and was buried at the Springfield Gardens Cemetery in Springfield, Queens County, New York. The following is his will:
In the name of God, Amen. I, Derrick Amberman, of Jamaica, Queens County, yeoman, being in good health at present. I leave to my beloved son John 5 pounds, and my great Dutch Bible. To Margaret, my dearly beloved wife, the best bed and its furniture, all her wearing clothes, my cupboard and all the linens that shall be therin and 30 pounds a year during her widowhood or for life. The whole of my estate, real or personal, in Jamaica or elsewhere I empower my executors to make sale of and turn into money at the best advantage within a reasonable time after my decease, and the monies therefrom to be applied as follows: I give for the maintenance of my son Daniel 300 pounds, he to be maintained amongst my three children, and after his death waht may be left thereof to be divided amongst my said children, namely, John, Derrick's heirs and Sarah. The rest of my estate I order to be divided into three parts, half one part to my son John, or if dead to his children, one part to the children of my son Derrick, deceased, one to my daughter Sarah, or if dead to her children, and one half part to my son Cornelius if at that time he be within the Kings lines, if not to his children when at lawful age. I appoint my trusty and loving brother, Peter Amberman, of Kings County, my loving cousin, Peter Wickoff, of Flat Lands, Kings County, and my friend and cousin, Peter Amberman, at Staten Island, executors, allowing them reasonable satisfaction for their trouble.
