Johnny Henry Davis, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away June 5, 2013. Johnny was born January 21, 1942, in Auburn, Alabama, to Johnny Henry and Ruth Maurine (Black) Davis, Sr. Johnny became a "Fighting Texas Aggie" graduating with his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Class of 1963. After graduation, his first job was at Collins Radio Co. in Richardson, Texas as a production test equipment design engineer.

Johnny's hobbies included ham radio. First licensed at age 13, he held the call K5LZA, later, changing that call to K5JD. Johnny's skill with Morse code was unparalleled. While attending Radio School in the Army National Guard, Johnny was asked to serve as the assistant instructor his first day in the class since he already excelled in the class curriculum.

Many years ago, Johnny was the driving force that saw the storm spotting potential of ham radio operators and worked with the Dallas Fire Marshall's office to set up the Dallas RACES organization, SKYWARN and later established the Dallas RACES council to unify the RACES procedures of all Dallas county cities to work as an effective team relaying Weather Spotter reports from the amateur radio nets to various media outlets for reports to the public. Johnny served as RACES Radio Officer for the City of Dallas and Radio Officer for Dallas County from about 1970-2007, a true ham radio operator who thought of others, first, in protecting lives.

Johnny held many offices in the Dallas Amateur Radio Club, and was the trustee/owner of the 146.96, K5JD repeater, in Dallas TX, and trustee of the Dallas Amateur Radio Club (DARC) station license, W5FC. He was very active in all types of public service work including phone and CW traffic nets, RACES, ARES. Through his ham career, he served as the Net Manager for the North Texas Traffic Net (NTTN) in the late 60's which became today's Texas Traffic Net (TTN), Texas CW Traffic Net, manager of the 7290 Traffic Net in the mid to late 60's and was very active in the National Traffic System's CW traffic net system, working in the RN5 Net, CAN, UTL, and served as NCS on RN5 and CAN.

He was an active member of Masonic Lodge Dallas No. 760 as well as several other Masonic organizations, and was Master Mason, Past Master (2004-2005) of Dallas Masonic Lodge No.760 AF & AM, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, York Rite Council, Commandry, Chapter, member of Lyle L. Cross York Rite College No. 147, and member of the Royal Order of Scotland, 2008-2009 Worthy Patron of DalCliff Chapter No.574 of the Order of the Eastern Star with his wife as the Worthy Matron. He and his wife also served on the Dallas Summer Musicals Guild Board.

Johnny's family has lost a fine husband, father, and grandfather; the DARC a staunch and loyal supporter, and the citizens of Dallas county, a man who provided the energy and vision that gave them the RACES organization that helps keep them safe in times of danger. Citizenship and generosity were central to his philosophy of life.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Ann Davis of Richardson, Texas; a son and daughter; 3 grandchildren; a great-grandson; 1 sister; 2 nephews and 2 nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Gregory James Sigman, brother-in-law, William Birch Harris, and grandson, Hunter Michael Sigman.
