James Madison 'Jim' Gooch was the son of Tillman D. & Mary Elizabeth (Justice) Gooch. He was the husband of Elvira (Grizzle) Gooch. He was born in Rabun County, Georgia on 10 Feb 1829 & died 22 Jul 1913 in Sarah (Now Suches), Union County, Georgia. {Source for following Article: Union County Citizen, Volume 2; #41 Blairsville, Georgia Thursday, 09 Oct 1941}. "Jim Gooch, the original settler of the clan of this state, was taken prisoner in the Fall of Richmond in the War between the States and was sent to a New Jersey camp. His son William "Bill" Gooch was taken prisoner on the March of the Northern Army from Dalton to Atlanta. Jim was a small boy when he came to this section to live. At that time Dahlonega was at the end of the road into the Mountains. The Family walked to where Mount Airy Church now stands in Gaddistown District and established their home, which still remains in the Family. He married an Elvira Grizzle, and 6 boys & 5 girls, were reared by them. Six of these children are still living (1941). Markers on the graves of Jim and Elvira Gooch at Mount Airy Cemetery records the date of their birth as 1806. Mrs Warren Gooch. Mrs. Warren Gooch Hendricks is the oldest Gooch now living. She is 80 years old(1941), and despite her advanced age is hale and hearty. She attended the reunion as she has done every year since (the establishment)."
