Mrs. Mary Magdalene "Maggie" Abernathy of Gadsden, Alabama was born in Alabama City, and was a lifelong resident of Etowah County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett W. Abernathy; an infant son, Gary Lynn; parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Bonds, and seven brothers and five sisters. Maggie is survived by her brother, Clyde Bonds; her children, James (Sandra) Abernathy, Michael (Sarah) Abernathy, Lavon (Frank) Pierce and Deborah Boatwright; she also leaves behind her grandchildren, Melissa (Byron) Tidmore, Kenneth (Jenny) Abernathy, Gary (Angie) Pierce, Stacy (Lee) Simmons, Blake Fowler, Jamie (John) Parton, Jeff Abernathy and Lee Anne (Thomas) Mooney. Maggie will also be lovingly remembered by her surviving great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
While doing the information for Maggie's memorial page here on this site, someone who knew her well suggested the following quote to define his impressions of Mrs. Abernathy. Fittingly, the quote is from another strong and beloved Alabama lady:
"Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye." - Helen Keller
