Jack L. Collins, 80, of rural Cherokee, Kan., passed away at 5:35 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, at Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg.

He was born June 12, 1932, in Cherokee, the son of Jack Earl and Okla (Moore) Collins. He graduated from Cherokee High School. He then went on to Kansas State Teachers College and received a Bachelors and a Masters degree.

Jack was a Korean War veteran serving two years with the U.S. Army.

On Nov. 3, 1965, he was united in marriage to Mary Mutum in Miami, Okla. She survives him of the home.

He started his teaching career in Galena, Kan., where he was a teacher and assistant coach, he then moved to Moran, Kan., where he was a coach, teacher and principle, after that he moved to Pleasanton, where he became the Superintendent of Schools for the next 18 years. During his retirement he worked part-time for the Bath-Naylor and Friskel Funeral Homes.

Jack was a member of the Weir United Methodist Church. Additional memberships were held in the United School Administrators of Kansas, USA United School Administrators and the Kansas Athletics Association. He was also an avid golfer and sports fan.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Banks officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherokee City Cemetery. Family received friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.
