Sir John Caldwell was born to Henry Caldwell and to Anne Hamilton. His father had come to Canada as a soldier in 1757. sir John Became a Barrister in Quebec (Lower Canada) in 1798 and was subsequently elected to the legislature two years later. He was Receiver General for Lower Canada from 1810 to 1823 when he was dismissed after being embroiled in a missing funds scandal. In the 1830's he established a large and successful wood mill at Grand Falls, New Brunswick. He had considerable commercial dealings exporting lumber to the United states and died at the age of 67 while on a trip to Boston Massachussetts. He was buried in Mount Auburn Cememetary, Boston, Massachusetts. (Biography source : Grand Falls Yesterdays, Margaret Marceau, 1995)
