John married Agnes Oliver in Barry Co, MO on January 29, 1838.
Goodspeed's 1888 History of Newton County indicates that John settled in Jollification (later shortened to Jolly) located in Barry County, MO & operated a hotel.
He ran an eating & drinking establishment at Jolly. According to "Genealogical Abstracts from The Newton County News 1890-1892" and other sources, on January 29, 1841, he was appointed as the first sheriff of Jasper County by the Governor of Missouri.
John was also the Postmaster of Capps Creek in Newton County in 1856. In 1873 a survey was conducted that determined Jolly was within the boundaries of Newton County.
At the time of his death he was working as a clerk in a retail store in Pierce City. It is speculated that he was working in the store of his nephew, Robert P. Osborn.
