SILVIS, Ill. - Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Stuart J. Mesmer, 65, a resident of Silvis, Illinois will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 416 N. Main Street, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 N. Main Street, downtown Davenport.

Stuart died Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, following an extended illness and courageous battle with cancer.

Stuart Jon Mesmer was born January 20, 1945, in Burlington, Iowa, a son of Robert and Julia M. (Mapes) Mesmer. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic grade school and graduated from Davenport Assumption High School class of 1963.

He had served 27 years as the president of Millwright Local 2158. He had also served as the Apprenticeship coordinator for the union. He will always be remembered for his leadership on the Executive Negotiating Committee; as well as various other key functions of the leadership at Local 2158.

He cherished his children, and his numerous grandchildren and always enjoyed spending time as family. He had also enjoyed a leisurely game of golf and the camaraderie shared with his friends.

Stuart had also been an avid sports fan. He enjoyed all sports and was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs.

Memorials can made to the Gilda's Club of the Quad Cities or to the Mayo Hospitals and Clinics, Rochester, Minn., in Stuart's name.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Deborah and Larry Galyen, Gillette, Wyo., Stuart Jon Mesmer Jr. and Joseph and Atessa Mesmer, all of Davenport; Bill and Mary Jensen, Lori Mesmer and her fianc? Carlos Longmire, Davenport; Tanika Zentic, Moline; Michael Jensen, and Daniel and Tracy Mesmer, all of Davenport; Melissa Mesmer and Chris Drake, Hay Springs, Neb.; and Kathleen Jones, East Moline; a special friend, Leslie Krueger Soucinnek, Bettendorf; grandchildren, Jade?, Magen, Andrew, Hannah, Billy, Olivia, Aniyah, Alijah, Amery, Nathan, Treyton, Michael, Evan, Taylor, Brandon, Sydney, Joseph, Makayla and Michaiah; and a sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Jerry Kinser, Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his mother, a son, Michael Jones, and a brother, Steven Mesmer. May they rest in peace.
