Barbara Lucille Greene, 82, of Troy, Michigan and wife of James for 60 years, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013.

Barbara was a quiet woman of faith who devoted her life to her family and to helping others. Her devotion to her husband and her children was to be admired. But it was her passion of searching the past through genealogy that inspired her to help others find their roots and understand the history of their lives.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois on March 28, 1931 to the late Willard and Lucille Baker (nee Johnston), Barbara was an only child. She spent her childhood in Ohio, where her father was a Manufacturer's Representative in the lawn and garden industry, and had built a successful business. It was at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where she studied biology, that she would meet her future husband, James Robert Greene. The two married right out of college, and following his service in the U.S. Army, her father offered him the opportunity to carry on the family business in Detroit, Michigan where it would be a greater opportunity for the business to grow. So in 1955, she settled in Michigan and her husband has continued the family business now to a third generation.

Barbara truly enjoyed being a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ezra Parker Chapter of Royal Oak, where she served as the Lineage Research Chairman. For six years, ending in 1995, she held positions with the National Society in Washington, first as National Chairman of Genealogical Records and then as National Chairman of Genealogical Research. She was well respected by her peers and helped many, many people with their genealogy and applications to hereditary societies. She served as Historian of the Mayflower Society, and later as Co-Historian assisting the Historians who followed her. Both organizations have numerous members who are grateful to her for solving their genealogical riddles, and being guided in the application process.

Barbara also loved computer jigsaw puzzles, playing bridge (belonging to three different clubs), and most of all, spending time with her family. She was proud to have raised her children, and passed on the legacy and importance of family. One of her favorite memories was the family trip to Ireland for their 50th wedding anniversary. All of the descendants of her family were able to be there. It was the trip of a lifetime.

For her devotion to her family and to others, Barbara will be greatly missed by all whose paths she crossed.
Barbara was the beloved wife of James R. for 60 years and the dear mother of Cynthia Merten (Forrest), Russ (Sharon) and Laura Vides (Ricardo). Cherished grandmother of Sarah, Eric (Stephanie) and Mark Merten (fiancée Kristen Healey), Timothy Greene and Christina Vides and great granddaughter Charlotte Ann Merten.

Her family will receive friends Monday 2-8p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward (btwn 13-14 Mile), 248-549-0500.

Funeral service Tuesday 11:30am at First Presbyterian Church, 1669 W. Maple Rd., Birmingham, MI 48009. Visitation at church begins at 11:00am. Interment will be held privately at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI.
