He graduated from Harvard in 1858 and after graduation was connected with his father's whaling business until 1873 when he began work as a bookkeeper at the Morse Twist Drill. He worked his way up to the position of general overseer and in March of 1889, when Mr. E. S. Taber died, he became the treasurer of the company. He held this position until 1908, at which time re resigned as treasurer and was made vice president. On the death of Mr. Andrew G. Pierce, he was elected president of the company.
Mr. Allen also served as a director of the First National Bank of New Bedford, a secretary of the board of investment for the New Bedford Institution for Savings, was a member of the New Bedford School Committee for a time and for many years was a member of the old Protecting Society.
On Oct. 16, 1860 he married Miss Horatia Anna Howland, daughter of Williams Howland and Mary R. Wood.
