On Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at the age of 77, our mother, Shirley Phelps Mangum, passed away from this life surrounded by her loved ones. Mom was born May 5, 1935, to Samuel Jackson and Leah James Phelps. She has one younger brother, Sherman Phelps. Mom grew up in Rock Springs, Wyo. She helped her father while he made a living in sales and accounting. After her graduation from high school, she went on to study at BYU. While there she earned a degree in bookkeeping. She was always proud to say that she graduated from BYU.

After college, Mom taught typing, bookkeeping and shorthand at Teton High School. That is where she met her husband, Marion Charles Mangum. Mom and Dad were married May 22, 1959, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were later blessed with three children. They made their home in Driggs, Idaho, where they worked on the farm and Mom taught school. In 1962, they moved to Hyrum and have resided there ever since.

In 1977, Mom lost the love of her life to complications from diabetes. She was left to raise her children by herself. While growing up, Mom would always tell us not to take a wooden nickel. Mom supported her children and grandchildren in whatever they were involved in. Whether it was 4-H, sporting events or school programs she was always there.

Mom was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many positions over the years but will be remembered most for leading the music. Mom has worked at Internal Revenue Services, Jones CPA Firm, Mr. Mac, Saddle Man Seat Covers and as a substitute teacher for the Cache County School District. Together as a family we enjoyed camping and horse rides.

Mom is survived by her children Daron and Sherry Mangum of Hyrum, Utah, Tammy and David Grange of College Ward, Utah, and Lonnie and Jodi Mangum of Hyrum, Utah. She is also survived by her brother Sherman (Sue) Phelps of Pleasant Grove, Utah. She was blessed with 25 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Marion Charles Mangum, parents, and great-grandchild Jessica Mashelle.

We love you, Mom, and are grateful for the example that you were to us. You taught us compassion and how to serve others. We are glad that you are finally with Dad after being alone for so many years. Know that we love you and will see you again.

Funeral Services will be held at noon Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Hyrum 15th Ward chapel, 455 E. 400 South in Hyrum, with Bishop Ken Boehme conducting. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St. in Logan, and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will be in the Hyrum City Cemetery.

Condolences and memories may be expressed online at www.allenmortuarties.net.

As a family we would like to send our heartfelt thanks to the Sunshine Terrace wing 2 and 7 nurses, the CNAs and to Dr. Salisbury who took such good care of our mother.
