Adult Film Actress. Also known as Karen Bach. She gained international notoriety for "Baise-Moi" ("Kiss Me", 2000), a nihilistic tale of two women, marginalized by society, who go on a senseless spree of sex and killing. The film was banned in France and became a controversial hit on the festival circuit. One American critic called it "'Thelma and Louise' meets 'Natural Born Killers'." She was born Karine Bach in Lyon, France, to a German father and Moroccan mother. While studying for a degree in communications she worked at a dance club and married a local DJ, who suggested they earn extra income by doing X-rated films together. The marriage soon broke up but she remained in the porn industry, taking on the name Karen Lancaume. From 1996 she appeared in nearly 40 French and German adult films. Her dark, unaugmented beauty and natural ease in front of the camera made her popular and she was nominated for "Hot d'or" awards in 1998 and 2000. Although "Baise-Moi" brought her fame, Lancaume failed in her efforts to cross over into mainstream cinema and after 2002 she withdrew from the public eye. She committed suicide in Paris, with an overdose of sleeping pills. The note she left behind read simply, "Too painful."
