PAULETTE HOPPLE
September 24, 1948 - December 18, 2008
Paulette Hopple was a woman of drive, determination, and deep sense of mission. Paulette could be stubborn and intense as well as humorous, insightful, and most of all, loving. The mission she took on many years ago dictated the rest of her life, and she never wavered in her drive and dedication to the call. Her eyes were magical. The glint was evident to everyone. Her intensity and love of her work helped her survive for over a decade with a very serious disease. Her facial expressions were famous and displayed her curiosity, drive, and love of life. Paulette was small in stature but she had the heart of a giant and unmatched determination. Her degenerative disease would have sidelined most people but not Paulette.
Paulette went home to her Heavenly father the way she had always planned, doing his work until the last possible moment. Paulette is now healed and kneeling at the feet of Jesus. I am sure she would tell us to REJOICE!

A mother’s love is never-ending. Knowing Paulette has entered heaven before me was unexpected yet rewarding. Knowing she lived a life that was pleasing to the Lord, I fully expect that we will once again be together in a much larger family. Growing up with three very different siblings, Paulette was the one who was always seeking answers. She was curious. She was fascinated with words. At the age of three while visiting family in Pennsylvania, she asked her father if this is where they made pencils. She was a studious child earning good grades in school, usually the teacher’s pet, and her friends were also very studious. She loved her classmates and siblings but usually preferring to be part of a group of girls. She usually got her papers to the teachers in time, however the midnight oil often burned late into the night just before they were due!
Books! Pass a bookstore and Paulette was gone! She could spend hours roving the aisles. Her little brother was always looking about and yelling, “Where’s Paulette, where’s Paulette!” He was the worrywart. She loved her books. She loved to read. In her teens she attended a youth camp and on her return shared with me that she had accepted the Lord as her Saviour and it made her cry. At another time she told me she was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues. At yet another time as we were discussing the Word, she could tell I was discontented and asked if I had accepted Jesus as my Saviour. My response was, “Yes, many times.” That was a clue that I needed to do so. She asked if I would like to rededicate my life to Jesus, and I said I would. What a BLESSING! We both cried and my life changed.While she was attending Jr. College in San Mateo, CA, she was active with Campus Crusade, and to raise money she began to make HUGE chocolate chip cookies. (This was before Mrs. Field began to make them.) They were so popular that it was a continuous effort. I began to hide the chocolate chips but she could smell them wherever they were. That became a family joke.
A desire to attend LaBri in Switzerland burned in her heart until she was able to go. There she made many lifetime friends. It was part of her lifetime searches. After hearing about the Summer Institute of Linguistics, she attended knowing the Lord would show her if this was His plan for her life. This created a desire to further her education and a dedicated search to begin this phase of her life. Then came her burden for Burma, a country she knew very little about. And her career became part of history. God led Paulette into a life of sheer joy, dedicated to serve her Lord.

Paulette Hopple passed away on Dec. 18, 2008, in the city of Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, at the end of a six week period doing what she was well-trained for and excited to pursue: language research and training toward development of Palaungic languages in the China-Myanmar-Thailand region. She received a BA from California State University - San Jose (1975) and an MA in Humanities (Linguistics) at the University of Texas, Arlington (1976). She took language courses at SOAS, University of London, England (1978-79) and as a Colombo Plan Scholar studied Burma languages and linguistics at the University of Rangoon (1980-81). She received a PhD in Humanities (Linguistics) from the University of Texas - Arlington (2003) with a dissertation on "The structure of nominalization in Burmese". In Thailand she was instrumental in the establishment and development of the graduate linguistics program at Payap University (1988-89). She served as Director of the SIL Mainland Southeast Asia Group (MSEAG) from May 1989 to March 1996. During this time she also taught Linguistics at Payap University in Chiang Mai. Over the years she had pursued the study of Plang and Wa, both Palaungic languages in northern Thailand and neighboring countries.
In 1989 she was diagnosed with scleroderma, an autoimmune disease. The disease had already destroyed some of her lung tissue which had to be removed. In the late 1990's while studying at the University of Texas she struggled with her health, experiencing considerable pain and difficulty moving about from a resurgence of the disease. She regained her strength and continued in her vital role for another decade. In recent years Paulette had a particular interest in the socio-linguistic situation of Palaungic languages and pursued research on the many small language groups with her characteristic vigor and curiosity. In all her work she exhibited a deep heart response to the wonderful love of Jesus Christ and the Heavenly Father, and a delight at His creation as expressed in language.
