Daughter of Dr. Jack Vaughan 1780-1850, a veteran of the War of 1812, and Martha Hughes Watkins 1784-1826, both from Prince Edward County, Virginia. Martha Hughes Watkins father was Col. Thomas Watkins 1761-1797, from Prince Edward County, Virginia, serving under General Greene, a hero of the battle of Guilford Court House during the American Revolutionary War. Col. Watkins was the maternal grandfather of Betsy Ann Vaughan Lockett.

After reviewing many, many documents, I am convinced her given name was Betsy and she went by the nickname Betty.

She married Stephen Clay Lockett, from Prince Edward County, Virginia, on October 1, 1836 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

They had nine children, including Pvt. Samuel L. (probbaly Ligon) Lockett, CSA 1842-1863 who died July 6, 1863 as a result of his injuries on July 2, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Betsy and Stephen came to Texas in about 1853 but Stephen died there on August 11, 1854 in Brenham, Washington County, Texas.

Why is Betsy buried here instead of with her husband back in Brenham, Washington County, Texas? Per my cousin Jim Lockett's good research, he believes the answer is that Betsy went to live with her daughter Catherine Thomas Lockett Harvin and her husband Richard A. Harvin in Brazoria County. Richard was a Cashier with U.S. Customs. When he retired from the Customs Service they continued to live in Brazoria County, where they lived out their days and are both buried. A big thank you my cousin Jim Lockett for this information.
