She was born April 8, 1916, the daughter of William and Bertha Reisinger of Newport, Pa.
Always saying she had the best parents, she continued their legacy being the best mother of Russell and Janet (Roux). And, despite the reputation of mothers-in-law, she was a doting mother-in-law to Janet's husband, Fred. But, superlatives will never do justice to Polly.
Compassion was her North Star, forgiveness her bible. Everyone Polly met left wrapped in her smile. Her gentleness, kindness, and empathy were extended to all.
As a young woman, Polly worked for Western Airlines in Las Vegas and the Raritan Army Depot in New Jersey. She helped her parents, brothers, sisters, and relatives whenever and wherever asked. She was a mother and friend to all.
She graduated from Millersville State Teachers College after which she taught in a one-room schoolhouse. She and her husband Bob were teachers from Pennsylvania to Wyoming and back, again.
Everything Polly did seemed so effortless- gardening, cooking, baking, mothering, loving. She began a Girl Scout troop and was its only leader. No one else had the commitment and or energy to follow her. While it lasted, her Girl Scout troop was raucous and dedicated, tom-boyish and genteel, just a whole lot of fun and learning to boot.
This was Polly: a lot of fun, always curious and teaching by example. When she was not enjoying the company of children she was gardening. Her gardens were lovely, the perfect setting for a spring wedding. Her style was a cross between English Cottage gardening and do-as-you-darn-well-please-! If a weed had any chance of surviving, then it would be in her garden, so long as it provided interest. And, if a plant provided food or cover for birds, then the more the merrier.
When she was not feeding children's spirits or enjoying her gardens, Polly was cooking and baking, nourishing our souls through our stomachs. She was baking bran muffins and making granola before it was popular. Her food was heavenly and healthy.
In her spare time and with boundless energy, Polly made her house a home, welcoming all into its warmth. Holidays were a time to decorate with abandon! Anytime was a time to create beauty. Her home was her heart: comfortable, inviting and sweet.
She was devoted to her husband, Bob and they were life partners for over 62 years. From their hearts, Polly and Bob provided their children love and security. From their actions, they provided their children joy and memorable experiences.
Having traveled worldwide with Bob in their retirement years, Polly decided she wanted to stay closer to home, tend her gardens, and enjoy her two grandchildren, Ryan and Allison. She still had a heart full of love and kindness to share.
Polly's first concern for anyone in her company was their comfort. We can all only strive to be the person she was. Few will ever be her equal.
She and her family were fortunate to be helped by Caregivers and Hospice of Central Pennsylvania whose kindness has been invaluable and exceptional. They made Polly's last days comfortable and as happy as possible.
Close friends and neighbors must be thanked for their many kindnesses. Theirs and Polly's was proof not only of 'do unto others' but the best of 'you reap what you sow.'
Polly is also survived by one brother, Philip Reisinger and his wife, Betty; and, brother-in-law, Andy Aldinger. She was preceded in death by three sisters; Carrie Partridge, Janet Aldinger and Lois Gregory; and three brothers, William, Brooks and Edgar Reisinger.
Polly was the sun of springtime, the beauty of summer blooms, and the joy of autumn harvest.
Family and friends are invited to services on Thursday from the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with a visitation from 1:30 PM until the funeral service to begin at 2 PM. The Reverend Gloria McPherson is officiating. Burial will follow in the Newport Cemetery.
Her family requests memorial contributions to be sent to Hospice of Central Pennsylvania,1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, Pa. 17110. www.pennlive.com/obits
